North Clear Creek Falls is a stunning photo opportunity. Its waters come from a calm peaceful meadow and cascade 100 feet down a volcanic rock shelf into the canyon below. Access to these falls is easy and requires no hiking for the “top down” shooting positions. For the adventurous who wish to capture the falls from the bottom, a very steep (but short) hike is required down the side of the canyon. The route to the falls will take us through the Rio Grande National Forest areas and alongside the Rio Grande River. This valley is one of the most beautiful in all Colorado.
The North Clear Creek Falls is also a nesting area for the rare black swift. These birds nest in the nooks and cracks of the waterfall’s cliff face, allowing the water’s mist to cool their nests during the summers. Nests can even be found behind the falls themselves.
Due to distance and travel time, this location is only available when combined with other tour destinations in Southern Colorado like the Great Sand Dunes National Park, Mesa Verde or Engineer Pass (Ouray/Telluride region) (multi-day tour required).
