A majestic, natural wonder that has captivated the hearts and imaginations of visitors from all around the globe, this iconic arch (located in the Island in the Sky area of the park) draws crowds each year to witness the spellbinding beauty of the sunrise as it glows like molten gold through the archway.

Sunrise Photos

If you’re looking for the best photo opportunity, it’s recommended to visit Mesa Arch at dawn. The sunrise over Canyonlands National Park is a truly unforgettable sight, and the way the light illuminates the arch creates a rich red “fiery glow” under the bottom of the arch.

The trail to reach Mesa Arch is only 0.5 miles in length and has relatively mild inclines. It’s important to arrive early (as in 2 hrs before dawn during high season) in order to secure a good spot for your camera, so be sure to bring flashlights for the walk. The space available for a good photo is limited and there are always plenty of photographers arriving early in order to get those coveted locations.

The History of Mesa Arch

The arch itself was formed through the process of erosion, where sandstone was gradually worn away by the elements of wind and water over time. This erosion left behind a natural bridge that extends nearly 90 feet in length and towers 15 feet high. The archway is an awe-inspiring sight to behold, with its vibrant hues of red and orange, and the jagged rocks that frame the arch add a dramatic effect to its overall appearance.

Apart from its geological significance, Mesa Arch also holds a special place in the cultural history of the region. The indigenous people of the area, the Ancestral Puebloans, regarded Mesa Arch as a sacred location, and it was a place of gathering and ceremony for them. They recognized the arch’s spiritual energy and used it as a place to perform important rites and rituals. Today, visitors can still feel the resonance of the arch’s spiritual past, adding an extra layer of meaning and significance to the experience of witnessing its natural beauty.

Mesa Arch is an iconic photographer’s location, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view. The arch frames the landscape perfectly, creating a stunning natural picture that is unlike anything else in the world. The sunrise over the park is particularly special, as the light filters through the arch and creates a magical effect that is truly unforgettable.
