History and Naming of Delicate Arch

Delicate Arch, situated in the eastern section of the park, derives its name from its slender, graceful shape. The arch has been a source of fascination for centuries, with ancient Pueblo people and early settlers using the area for hunting and gathering. It was first described by white explorers in the mid-1800s and has since become a symbol of the American West.

Hiking to Delicate Arch

For visitors to Arches National Park, hiking to Delicate Arch is a must-do. The trailhead is located at Wolfe Ranch, where visitors can see the remnants of a pioneer cabin built in the late 1800s. The trail is 3 miles roundtrip and takes about 2-3 hours to complete. The hike is moderate in difficulty, with some steep sections and exposed slickrock that can be slippery when wet. The trail is well-marked and offers stunning views of the surrounding rock formations.

Petroglyphs along the Trail

As visitors make their way along the trail to Delicate Arch, they will come across a series of petroglyphs etched into the rock walls. These ancient carvings offer a glimpse into the lives of the people who once lived in the area. The petroglyphs are thought to be around 1,000 years old and depict a variety of animals, people, and abstract shapes.

Photographing Delicate Arch

Delicate Arch is not only a stunning sight to behold but also a popular subject for photographers. It has become a photographic icon, featured in countless magazines, advertisements, and films. One of the best times to photograph Delicate Arch is at night when the Milky Way galaxy can be seen behind the arch. Consider a night sky photography workshop, to learn how to capture the arch under the stars.

Other Arches in the Area

While Delicate Arch may be the most famous arch in the park, visitors can also explore many other natural wonders. The nearby Devils Garden area offers a collection of arches, including Landscape Arch, which spans over 290 feet, making it the longest arch in North America. The Windows section of the park features two large arches, North Window and South Window, which are favorite locations for watching sunrise in the park.
