Central City, Colorado

C

Nestled high in the mountains above the thriving front range of Colorado lies a hidden gem called Central City. This charming town offers visitors a glimpse into the past, where miners walked the streets and gold veins ran through the hillsides. With diligent historic preservation efforts, Central City has managed to maintain its historical charm and remain very much as it was 100 years ago.

Step Back in Time

The majority of the buildings in Central City were constructed in the 1800s, between 1860 and 1900. It’s no surprise that the most common comment from visitors is “I feel like I’m in an old West movie.” The town has a rustic charm that transports you back in time and leaves you feeling like you’ve traveled back in history.

A Town Reborn from the Ashes

In 1874, a devastating fire destroyed most of the buildings in Central City. The town was rebuilt, but this time with brick and stone, which still stand tall today. A large mural along the road into town depicts the history of this tragic event, and it’s worth stopping to learn more about the town’s past.

Unique Photography Opportunities

Central City offers a wide range of photography opportunities for enthusiasts. If you’re interested in photographing old historic buildings, signs, churches, graveyards, and the like, you’ll love this little town.  With its unique architecture and preserved buildings, this charming town offers a glimpse into the past that’s hard to find anywhere else. For a truly unique and private photo session, consider visiting the old Central City Opera House, which can often be accessed on certain days of the week (additional $6/pp entrance fee applies).

Central City is a town that seems to have stood still in time. It’s a perfect destination for photography enthusiasts who are interested in capturing a piece of history.  So if you’re looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of modern life, pack up your camera and head up the mountain to Central City.

This town is sometimes a stop on our Rustic Colorado Tours.
