Aspen Gold - Colorado Fall Colors Photo Tour

CColorado is known worldwide for its amazing “Aspen Gold”.  The reds, oranges and gold provided by a prolific population of Aspen trees are stunning fodder for our cameras.  While this tour focuses on fall colors, we want to ensure you enjoy a variety of experiences on your Colorado adventure.  As you can see below this tour includes a number of different types of environments to photograph.

Aspen Autumn Colors: Big Sun’s Fall Colors photo tour and workshop will take us deep into Southwest Colorado where the aspen stands are the most pristine. We will leave the front range populations behind and venture into some of Colorado’s most stunning locations, (Guanella Pass, Boreas Pass, Red Mountain Pass and the world famous Kelber Pass) all of which hold a wealth of photographic opportunities and breathtakingly beautiful views.

4×4 Jeep Trip:  The most amazing landscapes are also the most difficult to reach.  As such we will spend one day exploring the breathtaking sites of Yankee Boy Trail and Imogene Pass reaching elevations well above treeline (up to 13,114 feet).  Our private customized tour jeep allows us to enjoy the views from open air seating, while our expert driver navigates the rocky trails.  This is the highlight of the trip for many of our customers.

Waterfalls: Between destinations we will also encounter some amazing waterfalls deep inside the Rio Grande National Forest.  While there are several in the area our focus will be North (and South) Clear Creek Falls.  Easy to reach and magnificent to photograph, they make a lovely diversion as we travel from the South Central valley to the South West San Juan Mountains.

Black Canyon: At its deepest point this very steep canyon drops a dizzying 2,722 feet from rim to floor.  The canyon is relatively narrow in width and exceptionally steep on the sides.  It is this deep and steep formula that prevents light from reaching into the canyon and thus the name “Black Canyon”.  In one location the canyon walls only see direct sunlight for 33 minutes in a day.

Great Sand Dunes: As an added bonus, this tour also includes a visit to The Great Sand Dunes National Park. This unique landscape covers over 232 sq/miles and boasts the tallest dune system in North America.  Imagine sitting atop 700 foot dunes of perfect windblown sand surrounded by a landscape of open plains and snow capped mountain peaks.

If you have a love of mountain landscapes and true wilderness, then this workshop will not disappoint!

*note: Aspen colors are a “moving target” varying from year to year, as such the itinerary may be modified to maximize our time/exposure to the Aspen’s Fall foliage.  This could mean certain destinations or activities may be replaced by new destinations and activities with limited notice.
