South Valley Park
PHOTO TOURS / SIGHTSEEING TOURS
This beautiful area of land is located just outside the Denver area, directly at the border of the foothills. The area is close to several communities and so is not as "wild" as one might wish for (joggers frequent the paths), but Jefferson County has done a nice job of keeping the land in good condition as an Open Space to preserve "scenic, wildlife habitat and archaeological values".
For those who wish to see some amazing rock formations and practice their landscape photography in a lovely setting, without having to put on their hiking boots, this is a great place to visit. In the springtime the entire area is rich with wild flowers and an entire afternoon can easily be spent shooting just the flowers if you have a macro with you.
The rock formations are somewhat similar to Roxborough State Park and Red Rocks Park (though not quite as interesting in my opinion). Unlike the previous mentioned locations the rock formations here are uniquely located East of the path, as such the South Valley Park is best photographed as the sun is setting over the foothills (usually about two hours prior to actual sunset). Often this is a good place for us to end a full day tour as it is close to town and is best photographed in the evening.
